Alaska ROCKED my world!!!

7/13/06
if you have never been to alaska...you need to get there...this was my second visit and it was spectacular in oh so many ways...mostly due to the cool folks who hosted me in my stay up there and especially my friend's janet and beau....janet let me hang my hat at her place for a few days in anchorage...where we were mellow and caught a movie and read a bunch...she lives next to the busiest sea plane landing lake in the US...it was cool to walk around the lake and check out the sea plane action....she also took me all over anchorage...we went to an overlook and through the town and below are some pictures from that portion of the trip :)

this shot is of janet and i overlooking anchorage from an area just below blueberry hill...lots of clouds...which is what happened for the majority of the trip...but i enjoyed myself anyway...below you see a picture i took for my parents...when we went to alaska a few years back, my dad and i took a picture with this bear...i thought it would be cool to take another one...

another cool thing we did in town was a "planet walk"...anchorage had set up the sun and all of the nine planets in relative size and distance from each other through the town...also in town was an art project to raise money for anchorage using slamon...kind of like the pigs in seattle and thdonkeys & elephants in washington dc....i loved the salmon below...it was done by local school kids...gotta love the message :)

later in the trip, beau and i met up with janet and another friend from the pole...mary...she was up on kodiak island doing research on sea lions...well, trying to do research...seems like an animal rights group was trying to put a stop to the methods being used by scientists to study the sea lions...i hope she got to do some counting and such...her job sounded way cool...below is a picture of the three polies who had breakfast together...

after my time with janet...i headed off into the sunset with my ggod friend beau...beau and i wintered together at mactown on the ice in the winter of 2005...its soooooooo weird to think that last year at this very moment i wa son the ice...i think beau has the same feeling...it seems like a lifetime ago to me :) below is a picture of beau from the "solstice" festival in moose pass...it was really small...but this hat made up for everything...gotta love this shot...he was trying for a "mullet" look...i think he succeeded...i will continue the alska story in the next update...this one is getting long....more soon...here's beau....

hey there folks...i am back in PA again...after five weeks away in the pacific northwest...and let me tell you...i DID NOT miss this humidity...ugh...and i hear a heat wave is hitting this weekend...just perfect....but i should be inside working on my stuff that is being shipped on monday....however...i wanted to try and attach some pictures here that just don't seem to want to attach on the correct entry....so here goes...

Seattle take 2!!!!

6/25/06

okay...i am trying again to add some fun pictures my friends from a great BBQ we had at brad & jenn's house...there was tons of laughter and fun to be had by all...below you see some of the folks in attendance...erica, brian, david, chad and brad....

my good friends steven and jennifer also came to the BBQ with their super smart little girl Madeline...below is a picture i took earlier in the day of the family...steven and i also went out for lunch during my short visit to my favorite indian restaurant...yummy..

some other folks who made it out for the festivities were my good friends bill, gordon and chad...i can't tell you how much i laughed this night....brad's family was also in attendance, as was my good friend dan from the pole....as he is now living in seattle...but i don't have a good shot of him...but i will see him soon...

plus, michelle, another good friend, and her roommate came over for the rollicking good time too, below is a shot of cindy, chad, michelle and jen...too cute...doncha think....

as you can see from all the smiles...it was a blast....and it made my fast stop in seattle all that much more fun...next...on to alaska...

First stop Seattle!!!!

6/25/06
hey there all from the road...i am currently in seattle and headed to oregon tomorrow to see friends down there...but i have finished the first part of my trip to the pacific northwest...i hung in seattle for a few days before heading to alaska to experience the "final frontier" as some would describe it...but first let's talk about my REALLY brief visit to seattle for visiting close friends and attending overlake's graduation...my last set of 8th graders at the school graduated high school this year...talk about feeling old....below is a shot of me and my good friend bob hnaging after graduation...what a great guy...even if he does love barry mannilow....

i also hung with my friends patty and aaron...we went to this kick butt bakery for lunch...in the picture with them is their cat...kitty....i got to hang in the sun and look at the amazing garden and flowers they have...it was wonderful...

the other great thing that happened was a BBQ with my close friends at brad & jenn's house...it was a blast and it had been a LONG time for all of the gang to get together...we enjoyed food, drinks and lots and lots of laughter....what a great time...below is a great picture of the hostess and the host with the most...too cute :)

okay...i have run into a snag and will need to continue this entry with pictures in the next update....does anyone out there know why i sometimes can upload pictures on this blog and other times i don't have success...like in this entry...got three pictures on...now i can't get anymore....ugh...this is ttruly frustrating....more soon...

Traveling & a new Tattoo!!!!

6/9/06
hey there all...me again...sorry its been a while...i seem to always say that...but it is just impossible for me to update this blog any faster...sorry about that...time is flying in my life and TODAY i am jumping on a plane and headed to the pacific northwest for FIVE weeks of vacation and fun!!!! can't wait to see everyone and will try and update from the road...but i don't know how well that will go...also...people have asked me to post the website for the shcool in romania again...so click on this link and you can visit where i will be starting in august....

anyway...in the past few weeks i have been all over the place in PA, NY and NJ...plus i got a new tattoo...yep...my penguins....you'll see it at the end of this update, along with an explanation of what you are seeing...but let me tell you who i got to see on this most recent trip....

below you see a picture of my good friend helen from college with her husband ed and THREE kids robert, sarah and emily...all extremely well behaved and a blast to play with...i visited with them over the memorial day weekend...and although their swim club was closed for repairs...we had a bunch of fun taking a LONG walk, eating ice cream, going to the firemen's jubilee and talking about the "westside"!!!!! it was a wonderful time and so much fun to catch up with this super cool family :) hopefully it won't take me so long to see them again....
ps...hey emily...don't you wish your girlfriend was hot like me.....hahahahahaha

next up was my rainy trip to NYC....of course to check in and see my great friend lea...aka pinky...if you haven't caught her show...you should...she rocks...we went and had dinner and dessert with my "group" home friends from ecuador bel and luis....below you see a few funny and cute pictures from a night of laughs and awesome food...if you have never been to carmine's family style italian restaurant in NYC...you HAVE to go...its sooooooo yummy....i love the picture below of lea and i making fish kisses....okay...maybe its just scary....hahahahaha

the next morning i had breakfast/brunch with my friends fern and michael...we went to this great place called popovers, also in NYC...where they made real old-fashioned styled popovers...yum, yum...i also got to see fern and michael's new and amazing apartment...below is a picture of them after we were walking back from breaky in the rain...the instrument is from india, i think....

later that weekend i headed out to long island...and let me tell you...driving on the LIE when its flooding sucks....it was a crazy drive...but it was all for an excellent cause...my friend heather was graduating with her masters in nutrition after a long and difficult road....a bunch of folks from BU were there and i am hoping to have a picture of the whole gang added to this blog in the next week or so...but i need to get it from friends...some of the "bad sisters" though did get together for a breakfast at a NY diner the next morning...it was fun hanging and catching up....especially over a diner styled omlette and never ending coffee....no pictures seem to want to add to this post...so i am giving up...i will post BU reunion pics another place...sorry about that

that evening i headed to NJ to hang with good friends sue and richie...we also went to a good-bye party for a teacher i worked with at my first teaching job at the montclair kimberley academy...it was quite a strange reunion of sorts, as i saw teachers i worked with and students of my past who are now teachers at the same school....talk about interesting and a blast from the past....it was a great time....unfortunately, i don't have any pictures from the visit...although i might try and find some...as it was a great party, with drumming being led by my good friend richie.....

the final stop on this trip was a lunch stop in NJ where i met up with my college buddy tim...also known to me as tim-o-tay-o....we had lunch at this amazing indian restuarant....yummy...i love the buffet style lunch....it was sooooooo great to see him and catch up and hear all the stories of his family, which has grown since i last saw him...overall it was a great trip to the "close" north...

finally....about two weeks ago now i went to a cool cat in manayunk, PA to get a tattoo...the dude's name was cosmo...and i have to say i am pleased with his work...below you will see a band of penguins around my right ankle...it is based on a picture i took my first summer down on the ice in mcmurdo...the best part of this picture was that the penguins, as they were traveling, alternated between one standing up and walking and one sliding on its belly...i thought this would make a great band...that means a lot to me....i'll try and get the original picture on here so you can compare them...but overall, i am quite pleased with the work....yahoo...as its permanent and all that....
well...i have to hit the road, as i am leaving in about an hour to get to the airport for my big trip west....yahoo!!! i hope all of you are well and happy and that you enjoy the beginning of your summer...i am going to send out an e-mail with my contact information for romania, as i head there on august 3rd....yahooooooo...its a very exciting time in my life and i hope the same is for you :) talk soon....and hopefully i'll post pictures from the road...

sorry...this one is long...my trip to colorado

5/24/06
hey there folks from chief dani (doncha love this chair)...how is everyone doing??? i have recently returned from a wonderful trip all over Colorado and a bachelorette weekend in vegas...and as the saying goes...what happened in vegas, stays in vegas...i am hoping to get some pictures from vegas as i didn't take any...i know, i know...shocking...but there were too many cameras already...so hopefully some of the women i went with will pass some shots my way :)

below are pictures from my excellent trip to colorado...i saw lots of folks i haven't seen in a while and it was superb to catch up with all of them...i promised if i took their picture i would put it on the blog...so here is the trip in a nutshell....

the first stop was having lunch with my good friends renny and janice...i know renny from when i was in CA with NASA for two weeks...he is an educator too...although unfortunately he just went into the hospital for some surgery and the cleaning of a staph infection...if you know renny, he would love to hear from folks...so get in touch with me if you need his e-mail address...we had lunch together before all of hospital stuff, at a great mexican joint on colfax...i have been there before and it is YUMMY!!!!
after lunch with renny and janice i went to one of my favorite book stores in the world...the tattered cover...and sat with an amazing book called "What We Eat"...its a photo journal of different families from around the world and what they eat in a week...blew me away to see how much coca-cola families in mexico drink...or the pringles alongside the seal meat in greenland and just how much more of everything the US families had compared to the third world folks...just incredible...after reading for a while i headed on out to spend the night with my ice friend paddy and her daughter olivia...and don't forget their energetic short haired poodle jack...paddy cooked minestrone for me that was delicious...you just never know if ice people can cook, because we never get to on the ice...here's a shot of paddy and her daughter and jack...thanks for a great time...you all rock :)

next stop was the next day up in longmont where i met my old teaching buddy and friend corey and her daughter ellie...ellie is adorable and talk about mellow...the waitstaff loved her and her super cool hat and she seemed to have fun looking around and smiling at folks...such a cutie...for those of you in Colorado...corey's husband is an acupuncturist...specializing in relieving folks of their migraine headaches...he has a great track record so get in touch if you would like to have him work with you....lunch was tasty at the pumphouse...and the company was outstanding...to see more cute picture of ellie and her mom and dad...check out their blog : http://spaces.msn.com/elliesmom/

around this time i finished an excellent book called...Skipping Towards Gomorrah...the use of the 7 deadly sins to pursue happiness...it is written by Dan Savage...who writes the syndicated column savage love...and it was hilarious...if you get a chance you should read through it...it will have you laughing out loud....next stop on the dani colorado tour was also in Longmont...i got to visit with my short, loud friend becky and her family...husband mike, step-daughter kristy and sons jack and ben....it was a great time seeing the family and catching up on the past few months...we also got to watch the Antarctica DVDs i have and jack was astounded...below is a picture of the whole family...speckled with shadows from the leaves of their trees...

after my excellent time with becky and her family, i headed over to another ice friend's place, brandon's, and met his girlfriend keri...we all waited on good friend bill to arrive for dinner and hung out catching up...we had dinner at a tasty eye-talian place (i hate it when people say it like that!!!!) and then had a competitive two games of settlers of catan...if you have never played this game...its a bunch of fun...you should try it....here we are hanging on brandon and keri's couch...

the next morning i got up to meet a person i had met in thailand for breakfast....i haven't seen jo since october and even then we only hung out for a few days...but obviously we had a good time and kept in touch...jo is an energy worker and her friend tony is a mechanic and all-round good guy...it was great to grab some grub with them and catch up on the rest of jo's trip and the rest of my trip after thailand....and of course, what is coming up for both of us.... for the next stop i had to drive close to four and half hours...across the state...through the rockies...and what an impressive drive it was...PLUS...some of the ski slopes were still up and running...but most of them were mostly green and closed down for the season...if you have never been to the rocky mountains...you need to get there...they are just stunning in my opinion :) i was on my way to visit a great couple from the ice...lynn and tom...now normally lynn and tom are on the ice for the winter...but i was lucky and they weren't this year...i got to see their new house, experience their garage sale, go to an arts walk in grand junction and visit the colorado national monument...plus we had some amazing indian and tibetan food...all in two days, it was a blast of a time....i have a link to their blog on the right hand side of mine...feel free to visit them whenever :)

back over the mountains i went, did i say they were amazing....wowowowow.... to meet up with a past student of mine who has now graduated college as of a week or two ago...man, i am getting old...but below you see allison...an old overlake student of mine...she has just finished studying at colorado college and is taking a year off before pursuing her master in global healthcare...it is amazing what happens to students as they grow up...so many cool experiences and so many excellent career paths...i love that i get to stay in touch with so many...keeps me young and involved :)

after hanging with allison i met up with my excellent ice friend from pole, kelly, who was hanging at her mom's cool co-op housing in colorado springs...such an amazing idea for a living community i have to say...kelly had just returned from a month in costa rica learning spanish and traveling the country and is headed in about a week to honduras to volunteer as an engineer for a project concerning water in a region of honduras...can you say i know so many COOL people!!!! we had an excellent thai meal (the portraits of the queen and king were on the wall - always a good sign) and some real tasty sundaes for dessert...yummy....it was awsome to catch up and hear all of kelly's stories....lucky me i got to see her twice :)

the next day kelly and i headed up to the raytheon polar services corporate office in centennial to see a bunch of folks...i am always amazed at how many people i know who work there...walking through the building was a bunch of fun...it was great to see people and catch up and be able to tell them where i am headed next in my journey...many of them will be headed back to the ice come august...i don't envy them at all...i got to have lunch with three awsome ice women who have been in the program for a long, long time...it was great to hear their stories of where they have been and where they are going...plus, lunch was pretty darn good as well...below you see me with peggy, suzi and esther...these are some of the beautiful faces of the antarctic program...and they make me smile :)

after lunch with my ice buds i headed back into denver to watch a rockies game with my good friend lt. dan...another ice person, can you believe it??? dan is a NOAA core officer, cribbage player, an improving cook (not that i know that yet) and wonderful friend...who comes from PA...yes, you read that correctly...dan and i are trying for the trifeca this year - to see each other in three different states...we have two under our belts - PA and CO, with WA to come :)

dan and i had amazing seats at rockies stadium...seventh row up from the field, down the third base line...prime territory for foul balls...AND one landed about 5 feet from dan...but he didn't try for it...no mitt...the folks across the aisle from us had a mitt and they didn't even try...what a bunch of wusses i say :) the reason we had such good seats was due to another ice friend, keros...keros is a groundskeeper at rockies stadium (coors stadium really)...and we got to watch him "keep" the grounds...and i picked him out...which i thought was too cool...because he was the only guy on the field wearing boots...seems like a good move...and he did a great job...we took him out afterwards for some drinks and pizza as a thank you for the excellent view :) here's a shot of keros and i...love that bazooka shirt...

next up was a trip out to golden for lunch...where i met up with yet another ice person.. aimee...who is there working for outward bound...although has an indoor desk...i have to say i really liked golden...i hung out by the stream that goes through the center of town, watching all the kayakers...they looked like they were having a blast...the one downfall, aimee feels, to the town is the way how it smells like beer and aluminum cans all the time...i personally liked the beer smell...but didn't have to deal with the can smell...here's aimee and i...

i got to hang with dan and kelly and kelly's friend rosie some more..which was a bonus for me...and then it was my final, busy, last day in town...i met another ice person...paul ... ice weatherman extraordinaire...who has moved on to police disbatch in denver and will be headed to CA to continue this with his wife and mother-in-law...we met at the downtown tattered cover bookstore, which was great for chai...i met paul's wife renee for a few minutes before having to race to my lunch date :) below is a shot of paul and renee...

after a great time with paul i raced back down to centennial to grab a quick lunch with another ice buddy...holly...holly is the man to know when you are on the ice concerning anything computer oriented...he has access to the best stuff, has a terrific knowedge base and has an incredible projector for movies...he is THE man to know...here we are outside of the corporate offices...

for my last stop in colorado, my good friend bill and i went to our "ice mom's" place...nanc and her husband mac are excellent hosts...and nanc always makes too much food and its always delicious...and we lucked out...kris, nanc and mac's niece, was still in town as well...we had a wonderful visit with these ice friends and it was great to see nanc...my ice mom, who i have missed...she is doing well with her health, which really makes me happy...and if you look closely at the picture below, you'll see she has short hair...and wants to be just like me :) it was a wonderful way to end my visit to colorado...so many good people...so many good conversations...so many good laughs...such a terrific trip!!!! thanks to all those who put me up (put up with me) and met me for food or drinks...it was awesome.... below you will see mac, kris, bill, me and nanc....thanks again to all :)

i've been missing...sorry about that

4/28/06
holy cow...time is flying by and now my traveling days are coming quickly again...i am headed all over the place before going overseas this summer..from denver to vegas to seattle to oregon to alaska...trying to see as many folks as possible before leaving the continent again...as a matter of fact i have seen quite a few recently and thought you might like to see who and how they are doing...i love catching up with people...makes me smile :)

one of my first visits on my trip south was with my friend karen goldman...her girls, robin and melanie have gotten so much older...its freaky...i remember when they were born..now they are 12 and 9...can you believe how time flies...karen and i had fun talking about the past, present and future...it was a great visit...thanks goldman girls...

the top shot is karen with 12 year old daughter robin and the bottom is karen with 9 year old melanie....we had a fun time together :)

next stop for me was visiting with my friends the fierro's...laurie, mike, sam (3) and rachel (less than 1)....i love the picture of super sam and super dad (mike) with their matching capes...and the day i left was a hanging out day in PJs due to all the rain...don't they make a cute family...what an excellent visit i had...kid time and adult time...if you are in maryland, we tried this amazing indian place...yummy...way to go mike :)

i also got the chance to catch up with some brothers of KKPsi in DC...it was at a cool, new hip and happenin' bowling joint in the nation's capital...and it was a pleasure hanging with dr. kevin williams and paul pierson...paul and i hadn't seen each other in about 14 years...my oh my...and kevin and i had a blast at a dinner club the night before...can you say still full from all the food that was made and consumed...wowowowowow....

after i got back from hanging in the south i met up with some friends from high school...we realized we had not all been in the same room for about 20 years!!!! can you say crazy!!! we hung out in a local malvern bar and had a wonderful time...its amazing how many folks you can really just pick up right where you left off...in the picture are eric carlson, shannon timney, karen reiss, jim lewis and myself...it was a blast...and we hope to get together again before the next 20 years passes....

Christmas in March!!!!

4/2/06
Back again....and this time to show off my last x-mas present from 2005...i just received it in the mail and i LOVE it!!! it is an antarctic scrimshaw cue ball...a woman who has spent much time on the ice, tina white, does these and is a fantastic artist...i just got mine last week and had to show it off...there is a link to see more of tina's work on the right side of my blog where different websites are listed...you really should see what she does...it is one of a kind and extremely beautiful!!! enjoy the shots... the one above is the portion of the cue ball where the continent has been etched...isn't it incredible...and of course i asked for the j.r.r tolkien quote..."not all who wander are lost"...which i pretty much live my life by :)

here's a closer look at the quote...plus you can just see the south pole dome and "pole" peeking out from below the quote...i love this cue ball :)

this is a great shot of an adelie penguin and scott's hut...the woman is amazing...doncha think!

and last, but not least...one of my favorite pictures ever taken while i was on the ice...the adelies in a line..one up, the next on its belly, the next up on its feet and the last down on its belly...i love this shot...and it looks fantabulous on my cue ball....so again...go check out tina's scrimshaw work...she is an incredible artisan...buy her stuff...thanks again tina...what a cue ball!!!!!

Hell Has Frozen Over!!!!

4/2/06
Can you believe its APRIL already!!!! i cannot believe how fast time is moving these days...so overwhelming...well, you might wonder from my title what the heck i am talking about concerning hell and all that...a friend of mine from college got married...it was the theme of the group that went to the wedding...the boston crew was in full force for the wedding...and most of the crew was without spouses and children...can you say CRAZY weekend!!! and the first night of it was over st paddy's day...1st off...jason busch was the man of the weekend...and his lovely wife katie is GREAT!!!! jason is one lucky man...katie rocks!!!! the wedding itself was beautiful and well orchestrated and well attended and a whole lotta FUN!!! from the golf ball that threatened to interrupt the vows...to the dancing to jimmy buffett...to everyone at the wedding referring to our table as the boston "drinking" crowd...we were mostly women who came to honor jason and katie from our good ole days in beantown...and what a time we had :) below are some shots from the excellent event....enjoy them...we sure had a great time during them....more updates soon...
CONGRATULATIONS A MILLION TIMES OVER TO JASON AND KATIE!!!!!
This first shot is from St Patrick's Day in a bar where we were the youngest of patrons....and we did our six rounds of shots to keep everyone happy...but Jason, the man laughing in the middle, also known as the groom was home relatively early and definitely was not plastered...who knows what kellie is saying or why she is pointing, but i bet it has something to do with hell and it freezin over :)

I love this shot of katie and jason and their yummy cake from the wedding, i realize this does not show off her gown, which was beautiful...but i just love their faces in this one...i am sure if i asked, you could put a caption to this shot....yahoo!!!!

This is a shot of the boston crew and the man of the hour....otherwise known as jason's harem...everyone is showing off their new duds...and can you believe that weather :) it was incredible...and perfect for a wedding...and i have to say, i was very happy to be the only woman wearing flats...my feet and legs were happy as well the next day...unlike some folks'...tee-hee...

this was the cute 23-year-old boy bartender...his name was pasquale..."damn you pasquale"...he realized early on in the night that we were the women he needed to keep happy...as you can see from another round of shots the boy made...what a funny, funny time....

AGAIN..HERE'S TO KATIE AND JASON...YAHOO!!!
